Musculoskeletal Medicine in Clinical Practice
With a foreword by a pioneer of Pain Clinics, Dr Keith Budd, this pocket-sized book is a handy reference for family practitioners, medical educators in musculo-skeletal medicine. This field of medicine involves a large number of patients and this book is written by an authority on the subject derived from 40 years experience in the field, coupled with long service to both the British Association of Manipulative medicine and to the Federation Internationale de Medecine Manuelle. In addition to explaining what musculo-skeletal medicine is, this book discusses pain in the following regions: head, neck, shoulder and arm, chest, lower trunk, pelvic, leg. Then discusses whether musculo-skeletal treatment works in these cases, and a short look at the future of musculo-skeletal medicine. In particular it clarifies what is not within the realm of musculo-skeletal medicine neurological complaints, orthopaedic problems and the inflammatory diseases in particular.

A Whole New Life: An Illness and a Healing by Reynolds Price,
Reynolds Price has long been one of America's most acclaimed and accomplished men of letters -- the author of novels, stories, poems, essays, plays, and a memoir. In "A Whole New Life," however, he steps from behind that roster of achievements to present us with a more personal story, a narrative as intimate and compelling as any work of the imagination. In 1984, a large cancer was discovered in his spinal cord ("The tumor was pencil-thick and gray-colored, ten inches long from my neck-hair downward"). Here, for the first time, Price recounts without self-pity what became a long struggle to withstand and recover from this appalling, if all too common, affliction (one American in three will experience some from of cancer). He charts the first puzzling symptoms; the urgent surgery that fails to remove the growth and the radiation that temporarily arrests it (but hurries his loss of control of his lower body); the occasionally comic trials of rehab; the steady rise of severe pain and reliance on drugs; two further radical surgeries; the sustaining force of a certain religious vision; an eventual discovery of help from biofeedback and hypnosis; and the miraculous return of his powers as a writer in a new, active life. Beyond the particulars of pain and mortal illness, larger concerns surface here -- a determination to get on with the human interaction that is so much a part of this writer's much-loved work, the gratitude he feels toward kin and friends and some (though by no means "all)" doctors, the return to his prolific work, and the "now appalling, now astonishing grace of God." "A Whole New Life" offers more than the portrait of one brave person in tribulation; itoffers honest insight, realistic encouragement and inspiration to others who suffer the bafflement of catastrophic illness or who know someone who does or will.

Radicular pain - Radicular Pain, or Radiculitis, is transferred pain "radiated" along the dermatome (sensory distribution) of a nerve due to pressure on the radicle (nerve root; so named for its resemblance to plant roots) at its connection to the spinal column. A common form of radiculitis is sciatica, or radicular pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve from the lower spine to the lower back, gluteal muscles, and upper thigh, as often caused by a herniated disk or osteophytes in the lumbar region ...

Back pain - Back pain (also known as "dorsopathies") is pain felt in the back that may come from the spine, muscles, nerves, or other structures in the back. It may radiate from the lower, mid or upper back.

Headache - A headache (medically known as cephalgia) is a condition of mild to severe pain in the head; sometimes upper back or neck pain may also be interpreted as a headache. Headache is the second-most common form of local pain.

Rovsing's sign - Rovsing's sign refers to a test for appendicitis. If you palpate the lower left quadrant of a person's abdomen, and there is more pain in the right lower quadrant, the patient probably has appendicitis.
